This is one of my favorite questions to ask when meeting someone new here. Although, now, I tweak it slightly: What was important to you when you made this decision? ;)
Among the many expatriates I’ve met—whether in China or elsewhere—I’ve heard a variety of answers:
👩💼"My company sent me here."
😍 "I've always been fascinated by this country."
🛬 "My partner was relocated, so I/we followed."
🏃♂️ "I wanted to get away from my in-laws." (Okay, no one actually says this, but I’m sure some have thought it!😏)
👨👩👦👦 "We left our jobs and home country because we wanted our children to experience a new culture and broaden their horizons." (I heard this once, and I absolutely loved it! 🤗 )
If you didn’t ask yourself what’s important before making the big move, don’t worry!
First, your family and friends will probably ask you at least once a year. (Or is it just when you live in China? 🙃 )
Second, It’s never too late to ask yourself the right questions...
⭐ What was important to me when I decided to come here?
⭐ What is important to me NOW that makes me want to stay (or leave)?
⭐ What is important in my environment/lifestyle? for me? for my/our future?
... then you can find your right answers ;)
